Roster set for national tournament

The club will send Jonathan Battaglia, Ethan Castle, Nik Elson, Adam Friedman, Rob Mexcur, Zach Stinebaugh, Sage Van Wyk and Ryan Walker to Nationals this weekend at The Homestead in Hot Springs, Va. The selections were based off past tournament performance, the qualifier and availability.

They will be competing against 11 of the best teams in the NCCGA: East Carolina, UNC-Wilmington, Michigan, Ohio State, Delaware, IUP, Virginia, Virginia Tech, East Tennessee State, Penn State and Towson. USC is the South Region’s No. 2 seed after placing second in both tournaments this semester.

Also, the club raised $535 today at the Lexington Gamecock Club’s annual golf tournament at Country Club of Lexington. The club raffled rounds of golf at five Columbia-area golf courses, a Paula Creamer signature and a Gamecock varsity golf bag. Congrats to the winners!

The club held off a second-day charge by Tennessee to finish runner-up (406-415–821) at Rarity Pointe Golf Course. USC and Tennessee had the same two-day score, but a tie-breaker of the teams’ next-best second-day score put USC ahead.

The team was again led by Sage Van Wyk, who made all-tournament team with a two-day score of 80-76–156. Nik Elson made a hole-in-one on the 188-yard 16th hole. He hit a 6-iron that went directly over the flag, before spinning back into the hole for an ace.

Spring 2012 Update

There’s a lot of changes to the club for the Spring 2012 semester. The biggest: we have expanded the club to The Woodlands Golf & Country Club.

Any USC student can join the club under our “Gold Membership” and become a member at The Woodlands. The dues are $100 up front and $10 each time to play 18 holes (walking). Your membership carries over into the summer and you will be eligible to compete in NCCGA and Woodlands tournaments. It’s a really great deal for people who can’t make it out the course more than a few times a week.

We are keeping our deal with Country Club of Lexington for $300 a semester. The “Platinum Membership” covers a full membership at CCL, unlimited free golf, and eligibility to compete in NCCGA and Lexington tournaments. A “Platinum Plus Membership” includes both courses.

Contact Club President Rob Mexcur at 410-926-5261 or rmexcur@gmail.com for more information on joining the club.

Keep checking back with the website for updates on club activities and tournaments.
